How to Add Apple CarPlay to a BMW 3 or 4 Series F30–F36 (2012–2020)

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be added to the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series F30–F36 without removing the original iDrive system or losing the vehicle’s factory functions. The correct upgrade depends on the existing CIC, NBT or NBT EVO system and whether you want to retain the original display or replace it with a larger touchscreen.

Which BMW models does this guide cover?

This guide covers the following BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, M3 and M4 models:

  • BMW 3 Series F30 Saloon: 2012–2018
  • BMW 3 Series F31 Touring: 2012–2019
  • BMW 3 Series F34 Gran Turismo: 2013–2020
  • BMW 4 Series F32 Coupé: 2013–2020
  • BMW 4 Series F33 Convertible: 2014–2020
  • BMW 4 Series F36 Gran Coupé: 2014–2020
  • BMW M3 F80: 2014–2018
  • BMW M4 F82 Coupé: 2014–2020
  • BMW M4 F83 Convertible: 2014–2020

BMW used several different iDrive systems throughout these production years. The vehicle’s year alone does not always confirm which system is fitted, so the original iDrive must be identified before ordering.

What Apple CarPlay upgrades are available?

There are two main ways to add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to these BMW models.

CarPlay on the original BMW screen

A CarPlay interface can be installed behind the dashboard while retaining the original BMW display. This adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through the factory screen and existing iDrive controller.

This is suitable for customers who want to preserve the original appearance of the interior. The factory iDrive menus remain available, and the system can switch between the original BMW interface and the new CarPlay interface.

Replacement touchscreen upgrade

The original display can instead be replaced with a larger touchscreen. This modernises the dashboard while retaining access to the original BMW menus, vehicle information and settings.

Depending on the selected product, replacement screens are available with either a streamlined Linux-based system or a full Android operating system.

Linux screen or Android screen?

Linux CarPlay screen

A Linux screen is designed primarily for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It provides a straightforward upgrade without the downloadable apps and additional functions found on a full Android unit.

It is a strong choice for customers who mainly want navigation, music, calls, messages and voice control through their phone while retaining the original BMW Bluetooth system.

Android screen

An Android screen operates as a separate Android device while also supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Depending on the selected specification, it can support downloadable apps, online navigation, media playback and additional customisation.

Android screens normally use the vehicle’s AUX audio input or a compatible USB-to-AUX connection for sound. The correct audio arrangement should therefore be confirmed before installation.

Will the original BMW iDrive still work?

Yes. A correctly specified retrofit screen does not permanently replace the original iDrive software. The factory BMW interface, vehicle settings, parking information and other original functions remain accessible through the upgraded display.

The iDrive controller and compatible steering-wheel controls can continue to operate the system. Touch control is generally used within the aftermarket interface, while the original BMW interface continues to function as it did previously.

How do I identify CIC, NBT or NBT EVO?

BMW fitted different iDrive generations throughout F30–F36 production. Although there are common year ranges for each system, changeover periods and individual vehicle specifications mean the registration year should not be used as the only identification method.

The safest method is to compare the appearance of the main menu, controller and connections with the compatibility information supplied for the product. If you are uncertain, send DHStyling a clear photograph of the original iDrive main menu before ordering.

Can a reversing camera be added?

Yes. A compatible reversing camera can be connected to the CarPlay interface or replacement screen. When correctly installed, the camera image will display automatically when reverse gear is selected.

Vehicles already fitted with a factory reversing camera or parking sensors can normally retain their original parking display, subject to the vehicle specification and selected screen.

Is the upgrade plug and play?

DHStyling BMW CarPlay screen kits are designed to connect to the vehicle’s existing system without cutting the original wiring loom. Installation involves removing sections of the dashboard, connecting the supplied wiring and configuring the screen for the vehicle.

Although the kits are designed for straightforward installation, care must be taken when removing trims, routing cables and selecting the correct settings. Professional installation is recommended if you are not confident working with vehicle interior electronics.

DHStyling can professionally install and configure the upgrade at our workshop in Witchford, Ely, Cambridgeshire. Our team can identify the existing BMW system, install the correct equipment and test the original and upgraded functions before the vehicle is returned.

Customers can also order a plug-and-play kit for installation at home or by their chosen professional installer.

Frequently asked questions

Will the steering-wheel controls still work?

Compatible steering-wheel controls are retained when the system is correctly installed and configured.

Will I lose my factory parking sensors?

No. The original parking-sensor display can normally be retained. Its exact appearance depends on the vehicle’s factory specification.

Can Android phones use the system?

Yes. Compatible units support Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay.
